Product Description

Fiber optic adapters (also called couplers) are designed to connect two fiber optic cables together. They come in versions to connect single fibers together (simplex), two fibers together (duplex), or sometimes four fibers together (quad).

Technical Alignment & Compatibility

Mode Selection: Adapters are designed for multimode or singlemode cables. Singlemode adapters offer more precise alignment of the tips of the connectors (ferrules). While singlemode adapters can be used for multimode cables, multimode adapters should never be used for singlemode cables to avoid signal loss (attenuation).
Core Diameter: When connecting two multimode fibers, always ensure they share the same core diameter (50/125 or 62.5/125). A mismatch will cause attenuation when the larger fiber transmits light into the smaller one.
Hybrid Adapters: Typically connecting similar connectors (SC to SC, LC to LC), hybrid adapters allow connection between different types (ST to SC, LC to SC). Adapters bridging different ferrule sizes (1.25mm to 2.5mm) are more complex and precision-engineered.

Design Considerations

Most adapters are female on both ends to connect two cables. Male-female versions exist for equipment ports but are discouraged as they are subject to breaking if bumped and may cause signal degradation due to the weight of the hanging cable.

Fiber optic adapters are optimized for high-density applications and feature quick plug-in installation. They utilize high-quality zirconia and phosphorous bronze sleeves for durability.

SC Auto Shutter Feature: Built with an integrated external dust shutter that keeps the interior clean from debris when not in use and protects users' eyes from laser exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can I use a single-mode adapter for multi-mode cables?
Yes, it is acceptable to use single-mode adapters for multi-mode cables as they offer more precise alignment. However, you should not use multi-mode adapters for single-mode cables.
Q2: What is a hybrid fiber optic adapter?
A hybrid adapter is designed to connect two different types of fiber connectors, such as ST to SC or LC to SC, allowing for versatile network configurations.
Q3: Why is matching core diameters important?
Matching core diameters (e.g., 50/125 or 62.5/125) prevents signal attenuation that occurs when light travels from a larger fiber core into a smaller one.
Q4: What are the benefits of the SC auto shutter?
The integrated external shutter keeps the interior clean from dust when not in use and serves as a safety feature by protecting users' eyes from laser exposure.
Q5: What materials are used for the alignment sleeves?
Adapters utilize high-quality Zirconia or Phosphorous Bronze sleeves to ensure durable and precise connector alignment.
Q6: Are adapters available for high-density installations?
Yes, fiber optic adapters are specifically designed for high-density applications and feature quick, easy plug-in installation for efficient cable management.
