Product Description

MTP MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) fiber optic connector is a type of optical connector that has been the primary multiple fiber connector for high-speed telecom and data communications networks.
Standardized within the IEC 61754-7 and TIA 604-5 protocols, ensuring global compatibility.
Initially supported telecommunications in Central and Branch offices, now primary for HPC labs and enterprise datacenters.
Increases data capacity with highly efficient space use, addressing challenges in testing and troubleshooting multi-fiber networks.
Provides distinct advantages over single fiber connectors while introducing new technical requirements for alignment and testing.

The MTP MPO connector family has evolved to support a wider range of applications and system packaging requirements. The MTP 12 / MPO 12 connector is originally a single row 12-fiber connector, there are now 8 and 16 single row fiber types that can be stacked together to form 24, 36 and 48 fibers connectors using multiple precision ferrules. However, the wider row and stacked ferrules have had insertion loss and reflection issues due to the difficulty of holding alignment tolerances on the outer fibers versus the center fibers.

Note: The MPO connector is available in Male (with pin) and Female (without pin).

Single Mode fiber optic cable has a small diametral core that allows only one mode of light to propagate. Because of this, the number of light reflections created as the light passes through the core decreases, lowering attenuation and creating the ability for the signal to travel further. This application is typically used in long distance, higher bandwidth runs by Telcos, CATV companies, and Colleges and Universities.

The MTP MPO trunk cable uses fiber optic cable with 12 fibers in one cable with a diameter of 3.0mm. These cables are normally made with G657A1 fiber to ensure transfer quality. Trunk cables are available with 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, or 48 fibers in one connector. To save space and labor costs, multi-connector configurations are also used (e.g., 24 cores cable with 3 units of MTP 8 / MPO 8 connectors on each side).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What are the primary standards for MTP MPO connectors?
MTP MPO connectors are standardized under IEC 61754-7 and TIA 604-5, ensuring they meet rigorous international criteria for performance and compatibility.
Q2: What fiber counts are supported in MTP MPO trunk cables?
Cables are available in various configurations including 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, and 48 fibers within a single connector, and even higher counts using multi-connector configurations.
Q3: What is the difference between Elite and Standard Insertion Loss?
Elite (Low Loss) connectors offer a maximum insertion loss of ≤ 0.35 dB, while Standard connectors typically have a loss of ≤ 0.75 dB (Single Mode) or ≤ 0.60 dB (Multi Mode).
Q4: Are MTP MPO connectors available in different genders?
Yes, MPO connectors are available in Male versions (which include alignment pins) and Female versions (without pins).
Q5: What are the typical operating temperature ranges?
MTP MPO connectors are designed to operate reliably within a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C.
Q6: Why is G657A1 fiber used in MTP MPO trunk cables?
G657A1 fiber is commonly used to ensure high transfer quality and better bend resistance, which is critical for high-density cabling environments like data centers.
